Select Board Tables Lake Road Upgrades for a Year
Select Board · Meeting of September 22, 2026
Shutesbury Select Board tables lake-road upgrades for a year, orders a liability deal with the Lake Wyola Association. Highway Superintendent Dave Grenier said last winter's snow and ice budget topped $100,000, with about 30 percent tied to plowing roads around Lake Wyola, while the town faces a $100,000 liability cap on private roads versus $5,000 on public ones. Lake Wyola Association president George Abdow said the group runs on a roughly $38,000 budget funded by $150 dues from about 65 percent of 280 households, projecting a $4,000 to $5,000 deficit.
Town Administrator Haley said the town "can't use public taxpayer funds to pay for private road maintenance" even as residents pay full town taxes. The board voted to table turnaround, widening and drainage work for a year and directed the town administrator and town counsel to negotiate a liability agreement covering plowing and sanding with the association and affected property owners.
