Shutesbury Conservation OKs Two Wetland Permits
Conservation Commission · Meeting of September 24, 2026
Shutesbury Conservation Commission clears two Lake Wyola wetland permits in one night. The board voted 4-0 to approve rebuilding four retaining walls at 104 Lake Drive, presented by John Mooney and owner Charlie of Beal Lawn and Landscape, who said replacing failed river-rock backfill with trap rock means "we're not revisiting this problem again." A second hearing, for town-sponsored trail reroutes through the Southbrook and Lake Wyola Conservation Areas, closed 3-0 with one abstention; the project will disturb about 545 square feet of wetland while restoring roughly 600 square feet elsewhere. Abutter Wim Levine questioned a mapped trail crossing on Wendell Road and asked about a pending Kestrel land deal nearby.
The commission also deferred action on a resident's concern that an April inverter fire at a Pratt Corner Road solar field may have affected wetlands, and flagged a forthcoming National Grid transmission-line review set for October 8.
