Shutesbury School Committee Approves $20,000 Food Service Transfer at Year-End Meeting

SHUTESBURY — June 18, 2026 — Shutesbury School Committee votes to transfer $20,000 to cover a food service deficit at its final June meeting. Director of Finance and Operations Caitlin reported that the food service revolving account ran a projected deficit of roughly $22,262, with expenses of $105,041.53 against revenues of $82,779.42, consistent with deficits across all four Union 28 schools. The committee voted unanimously to cover the gap with a budgeted transfer from the operating budget. Superintendent Shannon presented an overview of learning walks — DESE-recommended instructional walkthroughs — and recommended that committee members participate in structured school tours in November and March rather than in formal data-gathering walks, citing small-school context and potential union sensitivities. Capital Projects Liaison Nate reported a $34,000 sidewalk repair bid from Johnson's Paving for the school's deteriorating east entrance and sought committee direction; members said they want the repair to proceed rather than wait for a Berkshire Design Group site survey funded at $15,000 starting July 1. The committee also unanimously approved five school policies and received year-end reports from Principal Ann, including recognition of student Archie for a first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award for reading more than 1,000 books.
