SHUTESBURY — The Shutesbury Buildings Committee voted to hire an engineer for $1,500 to inspect the town's salt and sand shed. Chair Frank McGinn's panel flagged separated roof-truss plates and bowed plywood on the shed's west wall as the chief concerns driving the review. Members also discussed a roughly $22,000 quote to replace a failed gym divider curtain at Shutesbury Elementary School, above the $15,000 the town previously authorized, and opened talks on converting the school's oil boilers to propane, estimating a commercial conversion burner at about $3,500.
One member said the committee "can't make this decision to go propane" without Select Board and school buy-in. The committee is still withholding $350,000 in contingency funds from the new library's contractor over an unresolved roof leak.
